This is a photographic reflection based on Caspar David Friedrich’s work (German painter from the romantic period), who produced metaphorical paintings, of which many depict one or several subjects looking at the landscape, their backs turned to the viewer. The scenery could evoke the inner landscape of the character, his emotions, his state of mind, etc. My intention is to have my image echo the paintings while setting it within a specifically photographic reflection. In my image, the landscape is indeed present, a mountain stands awe-inspiring at the forefront, but one element is missing: the character. Not a soul in that image, not a soul within the landscape, except for the photographer behind the camera. Only the photographer’s shadow appears, as a trace of the process and as an indication of the absence.
